Higher & Higher – Courage and Community in Richmond Firefighting

Fire Station #12, Richmond, VA, United States

“Higher and Higher is a large-scale installation of scuplture and images, reflecting varied histories of firefighting in Richmond, Virginia. A design collaboration with A Gang of Three, myself, Moseley Architects, and the City of Richmond, we designed an original ladder-inspired scultpture as an allusion to Richmond’s ongoing ascension to equality.

I curated a collection of images from The Valentine Museum (Richmond, Va) featuring a history of firefighters in the city, including the city’s first black fire chief and first black woman firefighter. The images adorn all glazing of the structure. Accompanying the photos are prints of my original sketches and drawings of prior firehouse architectural elements and firefighters.
